Should I use a base coat/top coat when I paint my nails?

I find a base coat of a nail strengthener is a good start. It helps the colored coat slide on smoother and stops it staining your nails. The top coat helps to stop the color from chipping off and giving you a high shine.

It's worth it, but not essential if you're using quality products.

All the best.

XOXShould I use a base coat/top coat when I paint my nails?
Always base coat. It helps prevent damage to your nails because the nail polish doesn't allow the nail to breathe.

It can prevent your nail from becoming brittle, and turning yellow or discoloured (from nail polish stains).

Top coat can keep you nailpolish on for longer, reduce chipping, and add shine!Should I use a base coat/top coat when I paint my nails?
id suggest doing so- if u do the nail polish will stay on longer- howevr some brands arent all that great and dont work so well a good brand that id suggest is OPI, ur local nails salon, beauty store, or wal-mart shoud hav it!! :)
i usually use a top coat but not a base coat because i use 2 coats of nail polish and if you have that mant layers it's too thick and peels off
nail polish lasts longer and your nails dont get brittle and yellow
yeah, i always do. Your nail polish won't chip as easily and it will help it to last longer.

  • When you've painted your nails, do you need to apply a top coat?

You don't ';need'; to but you can, I always apply a shining/wet look top coat. When you've painted your nails, do you need to apply a top coat?
It's a good idea. You should ideally put a base coat on too, which can just be a clear nail polish. Once you've applied your colour, wait for it to dry completely and apply a clear nail polish or dedicated top coat polish to seal in the colour, this makes it last longer, become more chip-resistant and gives it a nice shine. When you've painted your nails, do you need to apply a top coat?
You dont realy need too. But it works better. If you aplly a top coat on it then it will last longer. When you wet youre finger it wont come off that easily. It looks better when you do have the coat on. But you still will look good without it. Heres a picture of how you will look with it and not with it-

    Hope this worked.
its really up to you. If your nail polish color looks kind of dull, and not

as shiny as you'd like it to be then you should, and even if it is shiny, you can make it even shinier by applying a top coat, and as a bonus it acts as a protector for you polish so it will last longer.
You dont have to, but i would because it stops the polish from chipping as easily.

I normally put a basecoat, then 2 coats of nail varnish, and then a top coat :).

    xx
    You don't have to.

But it looks best if you paint your nails with the color, and then put a clear coat on top. It adds some shine, and makes the polish hold up a lot better!

    I hope I helped,

    ~Elaina (:
I would and I would also apply a coat before putting the polish on because if you paint your nails a lot your nails can eventually turn a yellow color.:/
not really, top coat is generally used to keep ur nail polish from chipping, makes ur nail shiny, and keeps ur manicure lasting 4 a really long time. its up to you! :D
I don't, and my nails look fine but when I apply a clear top coat it does last longer and give better shine x it depends on time x
I usually only apply a top coat when I do a design or something. But if u want 2 it won't hurt anything. :)
Sweetie, i think 褔ou should. You don't have to but its best if 褔ou to a top coat. Its reall褔 up to 褔ou. xoxo
I do 2 coats of the color and then 1 clear top coat.

They last longer and look better (shinier).
No and Yes, No You dont HAVE to. But yes, it helps the paint stay on longer. Hope this helps! oxoxox
You don't need to, but it will last longer if you do, and won't chip as easily.
you can if u want it makes your nails pretty and shiney
i usually apply to coats of the color then i apply a clear top coat
depends on the weather but putting a coat on too soon may smudge your nails
um...if u dont want it to chip off to ez...then...YES

How you tell if a nail is zinc-coated (galvanized)?

I have a bunch of nails here with no packaging and I need a glavanized one for a science experiment that I'm doing..How you tell if a nail is zinc-coated (galvanized)?
Any galvanized steel item has a low gloss silvery-gray/white color often displaying crystals or facets that form when the zinc solidifies. The surface will feel rough rather than smooth like an uncoated steel nail. How you tell if a nail is zinc-coated (galvanized)?
simple if the rusting has occured then only coating is done
Get some hydrochloric (muriatic) acid and dip the nail in it. If it starts to bubble, then it means the zinc must have reacted with the acid to release hydrogen.

Does top coat discolor your nails?

not at all. just adds shine.
It really depends on the topcoat. If you buy like a cheap bad brand or something like that it might. But if you buy a good one then it just makes them really pretty and shiny!
nope. makes it shiney and makes it last longer.
no. just makes it last-less chipping.
No it doesn't but that's why you use a base coat. :\

  • Is it bad if don't use a base coat on my nails?

I usally use a top after I apply a color polish...if I add a base would it make it last longer?? Also, is it bad to wear just top coat w/o color polish? Is it bad if don't use a base coat on my nails?
I prefer if you apply a base before or your nails sometimes will turn yellowish color. and some other time even if you remove the nail polish there will still be some color on your nails. such as red nail polish or black. sometimes the blue ones left some stains. Is it bad if don't use a base coat on my nails?
the base was actually created to protect your nails from the nail polish, so try to wear a base coat one day, and see the diference for yourself.
no, none of that is bad.
Base coat is pretty much to prevent your nails from getting stained by the colors in the actual colored polish, so you might notice it lasts a little longer but it's mostly to help prevent your nails from staining. And it's actually good to wear top coat with out color it helps your nails stay strong so they don't chip or peel as easily :)

Does anyone really put on 3 coats of nailpolish when painting their nails? (base coat, color coat, top coat)?

I have only done it once because I read some beauty tips that you're supposed to do that, but it took forever to wait to let it dry in between coats and I just don't have time for that. What is the purpose of that ? I usually just paint them the color I want and put my hands out the window while I'm driving to work for them to dry.Does anyone really put on 3 coats of nailpolish when painting their nails? (base coat, color coat, top coat)?
I've read that doing three coats (base coat, polish, top coat) makes them more likely to chip off. If it's a light color, I just use polish. If it's a darker color, I apply base coat first, and then polish but not a top coat because wearing dark polishes by themselves can deposit yellowish color to your nails that's hard to get rid of.Does anyone really put on 3 coats of nailpolish when painting their nails? (base coat, color coat, top coat)?
Yes! The base coat is used to keep the color polish from staining your nail beds. And by applying a top coat, your polish will stay on longer and be less likely to chip.

FYI: If you don't apply a base coat and your nails beds stain pink or yellow, you can soak your digits in lemon juice for 15 minutes to remove the staining.
It is know that it's the best steps to take to keep your nails healthy %26amp; to have the colour long lasting. Remember, light coats to your base %26amp; top coats are best.

    1. Base coat is to condition your nails as well as prevent

them from getting yellow from the colors.

    2. Colour is for color.

    3. Top coat is to help prevent chipping to your nail polish

    %26amp; many also enhances shine.

I'm a pretty busy person %26amp; I don't have time to do my nails every other day. Doing these steps help them to last all through the week. I, along with many friends, use Sunday evenings as our girly time for manicures, pedicures %26amp; special hair conditionings.

Hope this helped to answer your question. ;o)
ha ha. i just do the color and the top coat.
Ive tried this and I think the main reason they say to do this is to keep the nail polish from chipping off so soon. Well it does help but Im like you, it takes WAAAYYY too long to dry and I usually end up hitting it on something and messing it up anyway. So what I do is just put one or two coats of color (depending on how dark or light) and then a top coat for more shine.
You should use a base, to prevent yellowing/drying of the nail, then apply 2 coats of color, waiting at least 5-10 minutes in between each coat, then apply top coat, to seal the color and prevent chipping and/or fading.
I usually do 2-4 coats of the same color. I don't put clear color clear or whatever it is. If you do light coats, it usually only takes about 10-20 minutes for each coat to dry. If you let the coats dry completely before you put the next one on, as a whole, your nails will dry quicker.
Yes I DO do that. The reason is simple. If you want your nails to be healthy but yet at the same time look nice, if you want your nail polish to last longer, THEN you do that. If you don't care, then, just keep doing what you're doing.

The base coat prevents your nail from turning yellow. Sometimes, when you use colors like red, or brown, when you clean off your nail polish, your nail becomes yellow. And when that happens, there's not much you can do about it. So, prevention is better than cure isn't it?

And your color coat, well, I suppose it speaks for itself.

As for the top coat, the reason being is that it simply prevents your nails from chipping, so you can keep your nail polish longer. I mean c'mon, chip nail polish isn't the nicest sight to see is it? And again, it doesn't help your nails either, cos chip nail polish might leave a mark on your bare nails, and again, prevention is better than cure right?

The reason people do all those ';troublesome'; things is because they could either care for the nails, read it off some beauty magazine and decide to follow it, or they just want to keep their nail polish on their nails longer.

I suppose it's harder for you cos when you are doing your nails, you're doing something else as well. BUT, the key thing that I learn is BE FREE. Do it in your spare time. Leave an hour just to do your nails. That way, you can have nails that are healthy AND last for more than a week.

Just to add to the ';troublesomeness';, if you want to keep your nail polish longer on your nails, paint a top coat every 2 nights! Haha, jk, you seem to be a busy woman. So, may be you could try setting time to do it? And if an hour is too long, try some tricks to have your nail polish dry faster, you could buy those nail polish that drys in a minute, or those that HELPS your nails dry faster, OR what I do is that once I paint my nails, air dry for 30 seconds, the I soak my nails in ICE cold water, for another 30 seconds. And then air dry for a minute. Your nails would dry instantly like that. Unless you put a lot more coats, then may be it would take a longer time. But that's what I usually do.

And like the saying goes, ';beauty comes with a price';!
When I'm bored I put color, color, color, color, then top top.

Ha say that five times fast!!!
i usually do one coat because I do not want to fiddle with it. However, when I want my polish to last throughout the week, or when it's very important for me to look polished (peeled nail polish does not do wonders for winning clients over, and my nails do not look so good w/o it), I put 3 coats, and try to prevent myself from messing it up while it dries.

It does last much longer when you have 3 coats on
Base coat prepares the nail for the color. The color can penetrate the nail that is why you use tha base coat. The top cost seals the color and makes it more resitant to chipping peeling etc.
    YES
3 coats is proper bcuz 1st coat protects your nails from stains, 2nd is your desired color for get up and the 3rd 1 is top coat to shine and protect
    i just do one coat
I put the 3 coats on. The base usually dries fast so you don't have to wait long, plus it prevents your nails from getting yellow. then the nail polish color, sometimes I even put on 2 coats of color and then the top coat to prevent it from chippin fast.
no not really only the perfectionists
no i dont coz it takes 2 long! that is to make them supposedly stronger

Does base coat keep polish from staining nails?

So I want to paint my nails but everytime I do when I remove the polish my nails are left stained yellow and its disgusting!! will using a base coat prevent this???what base coat is best also?Does base coat keep polish from staining nails?
No, base coat and clear polish are two different things. Always use a good quality base coat, not a clear polish...Does base coat keep polish from staining nails?
If you put on a base coat then the colour won't stain.

Dry nail polish between coats, or not?

Every article I've ever read in a magazine says to let polish dry between coats when giving yourself a manicure or pedicure.

But when I get it done at the salon, they just put on the 2nd coat right after the 1st, and it still looks good.

Does it really matter? Does the acetone in the polish 'meld' the 2nd layer into the first, regardless of whether the 1st layer is dry?Dry nail polish between coats, or not?
i think at the salon they use a quick dry liquid on it or sumthin cuz when i do my nails myself and i dont let it dry it doesnt work out well, but at the salon it stayed on just fineDry nail polish between coats, or not?
That's a very good question that no one can answer for you exactly. I have been to several different nail salons and they all did it differently.

All these people are going to give you answers but do any of them know the truth? It depends on the nail polish, nail polish remover, and technique you are using that decides whether or not the polish is going to act the way it should. Some high-end nail polishes can be put on one coat after another - whereas some cheaper nail polishes it doesn't matter because the nail polish is cheap and will chip sooner anyways.

I personally let the first coat dry before applying the second coat. It's all what you have time for. I've noticed that when in nail salons sometimes the person doing my nails will do two coats really quick when he/she notices a customer waiting. Maybe they put the second coat on fast because they want to zip through you and get on to the next person?
im a beauty therapist and i dont think there is any point to letting it dry in between coats... that would take forever!!!

just do base coat, 2 coats of colour, then top coat... u can then put on quick dry oil or spray ( i find the oils work better) and let it sit for about 30mins.. i find sitting on the computer amuses me when they are drying.. and they dont get bumped :)
You gotta wait or it will peel off. In the salon they do each coat really thin and they do one hand then the other and then they go back to other hand and so on, which leaves enuff time to let each thin coat dry, but there pros so they know exactly how to do it..
YES ! YES YES,most definatly thats like the golden rule of nail polish.

What is a good base coat for nails?

There aren't any that I know of. With basecoats, you should never skimp on quality. I suggest Orly Bonder, or CND's 'Stickey' for top quality basecoats. They are about $7 or $8 each.

How can i keep my nail polish 2 stay longer? I hv also apply a top coat but still doesn't seen 2 last?

You can try to apply two coats of polish, finshed off with a top coat from sally hansen.

Wear lighter colour so that when your polish chips, it s not so obvious.

Lastly, try not to use your finger nails to open can drinks or scrap off things. Use your nail bed instead or get some things to help you.How can i keep my nail polish 2 stay longer? I hv also apply a top coat but still doesn't seen 2 last?
Make sure your nails are clean of all oils before you paint them. I have been using Sally Hansens Tufflon Clear as a base, then I apply my color, and then I put 1 coat of Sally Hansens Hard As Nails on top. It normally last 2 - 3 weeks. I reapply the top coat every 5 days. Good luck.
apply a coat of colourless varnish on top, it will stay for longer.
Use a good base coat. I like any of the Sally Hanson products. Also, if you use any lotions, cuticle oil or nail polish remover just before you apply the polish, make sure you wash and dry your hands very well so that there is no residue before you paint. Otherwise your nails will chip faster.

Or your nails may be unhealthy or dry. Find a base coat that adds nutrients. I know Sally Hanson has one that I use, but I can't remember the name of it now.

  • What was the material that coated the nail?why did the color of the solution change?

you do not give much info but I am guessing that you are doing a single displacement ( also called replacement) reaction..by placing an iron nail in a blue solution of the salt, copper sulfate. The iron is a more reactive metal than copper and will displace it from its salts resulting in a nearly colorless ( or very pale green )solution of Ferrous sulfate ( iron(II) sulfate ) and depositing the copper as an orangish slightly shiny coating on the iron nail

I don't think you should because it is made for arts and crafts and not for our nails. And the paint might not ever come off so by the time you are like 90 it will still be there...
I'm really not sure if that would work, but I don't think you should use paint. It might ruin your nails. Just use different colors of nail polishes and it should look fine.

  • Painting my nails without base coat?

Im wondering if its alright if i paint my nails without a base coat? Im too scared it'll wreck or something, I'm probably gonna remove them 2 weeks later or until i can get a base coat, what do you reckon?Painting my nails without base coat?
You should be OK as long as the polish isn't a really dark shade. But, it is always best to wear a good quality basecoat because they not only help prevent staining, but they also act as a sort of double sided tape and give the polish something to adhere to making the polish last longer. Remember that basecoat and clear polish are two different things. Clear polish is not recommended for use as a basecoat because it often yellows nails just as easily as weaing no basecoat will do. The yellowing is not usually permanent, and can be gotten rid of fairly easily - usually. You can try to gently buff it off as long as it is nothing more than just surface staining. You can use denture tablets and soak your nails in that for a few minutes. Also, soaking your nails in freshly squeezed lemon juice helps to whiten and brighten nails as does a diluted solution of bleach and water.Painting my nails without base coat?

I have natural nails and polish will start chipping within 24 hours. What is the best no-chip top coat?

There is a gel that you can put over it I think but I don't know where to find it and you can only get it off by buffing it off. I'm tired of waisting my time making my nails look nice only to see them peeling or chipping the next day.

Don't suggest I get acrylics either because I've had them for years and why should I waste the $ when my nails grow nice naturally.I have natural nails and polish will start chipping within 24 hours. What is the best no-chip top coat?
There's a good top coat called 'nail Xtras 3 in 1 top coat.' It acts as a top coat, nail hardener and base coat. As for the gel, I think you mean the stuff they use for false nails. That would be the ultimate top coat since it's super hard once dried, but you'd need to soak in acetone or something like that for at least 5 minutes to get it off. If you do go for that then be prepared to wear the same colour for a while. As for the 3 in 1 I mentioned, it works well and 1 coat should do it, unless you want to apply a base coat too.I have natural nails and polish will start chipping within 24 hours. You should really use a base coat too. I really love Creative Stickey Base coat, and also I use Sally hansen's Megashine topcoat.

My nailpolish can last for 12days before it starts to chip.
Rough up or buff your nails before you put a color on your nails. Apply two coats of color and then a good top coat. Try OPI. They have some really nice colors and topcoats.

if the smell of garlic doesnt bother you... then get a clover of garlic and just rub it on your fingernails.... garlic protects, and strengthen your fingernails... it also helps it grow. just try it for like a week and if it doesnt work then try something else. but i can honestly say that it worked for me and for my friends and relatives. No matter how much protective top coat i put on my nails, they always chip. How can i prevent it?
WELL GIRL YOU GOTTA BUY THAT EXPENSIVE STUFF BECAUSE THAT HAPPENS TO ME TOO.LOREAL MIGHT WORK FOR YOU.

Where do u buy the uv-curable clear coat for fake nails that doesn't come off with acetone?

I work in a lab with 100% HPLC grade acetone. The salon where i get my nails done doesn't use this product, but i've been to some salons that do but have a hard time (language barrier) communicating that i'd like a bottle for my personal use to take to my regular nail techWhere do u buy the uv-curable clear coat for fake nails that doesn't come off with acetone?
    http://www.premiernailsource.com/

they have great products and they r really cheapWhere do u buy the uv-curable clear coat for fake nails that doesn't come off with acetone?
I use this product in my shop and clients just love it. I am not sure of the exact name, but it is made by the ';Young Nails'; brand of products. It is a UV-curable top coat and it won't come off with acetone or any remover. The only way I know of to remove it is to FILE it off! It stays shiny forever also.

Your own nail tech could probably get it for you at a reduced price from her suppliers. Otherwise, look in beauty supply shops. It is kind of new and may be hard to find. You could also look on line for Young Nails.com or something like that.

That is your solution. Good luck
go onto ebay and type in uv top coat or nail art. It will give you links to ebay stores. I found some last night, and quite cheap really. They also have airbrush and gel nail starter kits at reasonable prices. Am just about to place an order with them so I can do my own nail art at home. Hope this helps.
i honestly dont think that you will be able to find that because most places that sell nail products require you to have a license before they even let you in the door...now if i'm correct i've never seen this in sally's nor have i seen it in the stores like cvs....so the only thing i can tell you is that you may want to go to a salon where the tech will understand what you're asking for but then again some shops dont retail that type of polish if they do retail its just on the colored polishes....so honestly you may be outta luck trying to purchase it....if the tech you go to doesnt speak good english then try finding some who does and explain to them what you want her to put on your nails....now on the other hand if you're getting gels then they should already be using the uv top coat...if you're getting regular acrylics then truthfully if you're working with 100% acetone the uv top coat wont help....you may need to think about going with gels altogether cause acetone wont melt them.....hth

Why do u have to put base coat on ur nails?

is top coat and base coat the same thing? Why do u have to put base coat on ur nails?
    A base coat has a number of functions;

    1. Helps the colour to adhere to the nail

    2. Enables the polish to go on smoothly

    3. Prevents the nail from getting stained if using a darker polishWhy do u have to put base coat on ur nails?
A base coat can stop the nails from becoming discoloured but the nail varnish. I think the top coat is to stop it chipping and i don't think they are the same thing.
no, you dont have too, but it's so if you use a coloured nail polish, it doesn't stain your nails - it looks crappy when people have yellow tinged nails from using too much coloured nail polish lol.
the base coat keeps your nails from getting yellow. the top coat (colorless polish) is to make it nice and shiny and no, they're not the same.
to stop from staining your nails

the top coat gives it shine

    so it goes

    base coat

    nail polish

    top coat
so it dosn't stain your nails
base coat stops the top coat from staining your nails

When I apply a clear coat, it messes up my nail polish!!!! How am I suppose to apply a TOP COAT?

After doing my nails, I like to apply a clear top coat, just to prevent chipping and just for the added shine. I wait a while to make sure that my previous nail polish is completely dry, but when I apply the clear coat it smudges the nail polish underneath and drives me CRAZY =P

I have maybe 5 different clear coats and they all seem to be doing the same thing, its like they activate the polish underneath and then they smudge it...

Any advice =DWhen I apply a clear coat, it messes up my nail polish!!!! How am I suppose to apply a TOP COAT?
I put on the top coat a day after I paint my nails. What you said always happens to me, and I found that doing it that way works the best. This ensures your nails are perfectly dry. One time I painted my nails at around 6 and went to be at 11, and when I woke up I had stuff stuck to them. That means they still weren't dry after 5 hrs. I really suggest putting it on the next day. It won't do any harm in waiting. And you don't even have to wait that long for it to dry because it's only one coat. When I apply a clear coat, it messes up my nail polish!!!! How am I suppose to apply a TOP COAT?
I think the problem is that your not waiting enough time to dry. Even if you smudge it with your finger it still not might be dry enough. Just wait a little longer and apply the coat.
As a former manicurist it has to be done lightly, with a light touch, or wait until the last coat is totally dry. When I do my nails I wait til the next morning.
Maybe the problem is that your nail polish isn't completely dry.

So you should try waiting a little bit longer before you apply the clear coat.
What clear top coat brand are you using? I bought a cheapie one and it totally took off the nail polish. Maybe try a different brand. Or just wait until the color completely dries.
maybe they arent dry enough. paint your nails then put it under cold water because it helps dry quicker. then apply the clear coat.
Maybe your nails weren't completely dry yet. Try waiting a little longer. That's really the only reason that would happen.

    Hope this helps!:)
Ok paint your nails with one coat, then an half an hour later do the clear.
wait 20 minutes before applying top coat
Do it while it's partially wet. That's how you're supposed to do it.
You haven't let your nails dry long enough. Like they have to be

    REALLY dry. It sucks, :[
ugh, i know right???! lol. That would happen to me quite often as well. But you must really really allow it to dry.
wait for the nail polish to dry hard
wait for the nail polish to dry
maybe you are putting on too thick of a coat of regular nail polish

  • Is there a special top coat you have to use for acrylic black tip nails?

I love having black french tip nails, but the topcoat I have makes them look purple in the sun.

I remember when I got them professionally done, the lady put some different top coat on the black tip.

So Im wondering if anybody knows of a topcoat that wont make the nail look purpleIs there a special top coat you have to use for acrylic black tip nails?
I think the topcoat you have is a UV topcoat. They tend to give out a purple tint to your nails.

I'd go with OPI's clear top coat. It's lasts a long time and is pretty nice!

    Good luck!

Nail hardener not as a coat/polisher, is there any?

I'm looking for a nail HARDNER, not cuticle, not growth booster, as an oil or such but I don't want it to leave a coat on my nail.

When you apply polish, water can't come through to your nails. So I don't want the hardener to be so.

Please, 1- provide me keywords to look for in a product as well as 2- brand names.

Oh, 3- I want reasonable prices, like that of the DrugStores' Sally Hansen or such.

Thank you, indeed.Nail hardener not as a coat/polisher, is there any?
To have healthy nails are important to eat healthy too. Many people complaints about their nails are weak. Our body are different. For healthy nails, I would recommend Nailtek Foundation, it very cloudy color and no polish is showing. This is foundation to improve soft nails to be hard, it prevents from nail slitting, and from dryness. Part of healthy is use cuticle oil, it helps your nails and cuticles from dryness and skin peeling.

Nailtek Foundation $10 ( you may find it in nails salon or sally's)

Will it ruin a drawing if you coat it with clear nail polish? What will happen to it?

Will it prevent smudging or completely ruin the drawing? Will it make the paper crinkle up? Will it preserve the drawing? I used colored pencil to color my drawing, so if that has anything to do with the outcome, please tell me. Thanks in advance. And Happy New Year! :]Will it ruin a drawing if you coat it with clear nail polish? What will happen to it?
Nail polish is expensive and you'll need a lot of it to cover a regular sized paper because the paper will absorb the nail polish and it become lumpy or warped. A wet paper is likely to tear. Brushing the nail polish on the drawing can smudge the picture by the brushing action and by the wetness. Most importantly, nail polish contain aggressive chemicals that will discolor and break down the physical properties of the drawing.

If your drawing was done on acid free paper (most drawing paper is acid free nowadays) just mount it in a picture frame to keep it in good shape. Will it ruin a drawing if you coat it with clear nail polish? What will happen to it?
No!!! Don't do that whatever you do. Please!! (Gets down on her knees and begs) That is a mortal sin when it comes to art. The only time where that would be acceptable is on an oil painting, and even in that case you would use liquin. I suggest very strongly you frame it, don't even think about using nail polish like that, it is wasteful and it will make your picture look icky.
It depends, are you talking about a pencil drawing? If yes then most likely. It's bad for the brush as well as the paper, the paper could end up crinkly.
Don't use nail polish, the acid will turn the paper yellow. Go to the art store and get some fixative spray.

When u paint nails do u have to put a base coat?

When i go to the salon and get my nails done they put a top coat and base coat. Do i have to put a base coat and top coat? because when i don't do it the nail polish is all bumpy and not smooth. also can i use a base coat as a top coat to and how many coats of nail polish(color) do i have to put on to make it look pro. When u paint nails do u have to put a base coat?
A base coat helps to keep the polish from staining the nails. You can not use a base coat as a top coat. If you are getting bumps when you polish your polish may be too old and thick and/or you are applying it to thick. When u paint nails do u have to put a base coat?
you dont have to use a base coat..or a top coat for that matter. base coat protects your nails from whatever the nail polishes have. and top coat just protects the nail polish. i so reccomend that especially when you have designs on your nails. umm...i know theres a difference between the base coat and the top coat but i dont know what is it. ask the salon ppl. and..usually two coats is good enough. but it depends, like..if you put more and more coats sometimes the color keeps going darker. and the less coats the lighter the color. but two coats should be good enough.
Its good to use a base coat in order to protect your nails from the chemicals in the nail polish.

    I hope this helps :-)

Is a base coat NEEDED when polishing nails?

I was looking at stuff online about how to polish nails and all of them said to start with a base coat. Why is a base coat used? Do I need to use a base coat?

    Also...

I tried using a base coat and then I did 2 coats of polish and 1 top coat. I let it dry for like 15 minutes and after that it smudged and some of it chipped. Did I use to much polish?

    Thanks!

:)Is a base coat NEEDED when polishing nails?
You don't NEED a base coat, but it helps the nail and supposedly makes it last longer, it only works like that for some of mine though. And yeah, you probably did. Try doing one coat and then 1 top coat, or ditch the whole top coat. or ditch the base and do the rest. :]Is a base coat NEEDED when polishing nails?
a base coat is used to prevent against the nail polish chipping or peeling off. i think you did use too much polish hun. what you should do is just put on the base coat and then either a thick layer of polish or two thin layers of polish. you don't want to pile up too much polish on your nail or it wont dry all the way and it'll smudge and just cause trouble. and you really don't need a top coat unless let's say you're going to prom or something and you want your nails to look fabulous and have absolutely no chance of chipping or any problems. you should give your nails a loooong time to dry for that though. like at least 30-40 minutes because of all the layers. and let each layer dry before putting on the next one
You don't really NEED a base coat but i think they suggest it because it keeps your nails healthier. Also, no matter how long you let your nails dry, they can still chip pretty easily but nicer nail polish (more expensive usually) can chip less easily. Waiting a little in between each coat of polish can also help. :)))))
yes, one base coat is good because you need to build the color unless you want it sheer, not only that but it will make it last longer. and some polish (if old) will dry slower. make sure it has a semi runny consistency, i like sally hansen flash dry you usually can get away with one coat if you must!
    Nah.

If you use dark colours a lot, it might be best to avoid staining.

But i never use one and my nails are just fine, however, I don't use it all the time though.

My nails have a wee break in between.

I've also found that varnish goes on better without a base coat- just my experience.

You might have used too much.

Do very sheer layers, if there's too much it will dry on top but still be gungey underneath.
personally i dont use a base coat and i do two coats of nail color then let it dry for 30 minutes and then put a top coat on and let it dry for another 30, try putting your hand in front of a fan to help dry faster
I just did my nails. I just did the color (Shimmer %26amp; Shine from Bonnie Bell) and I did a top coat (N.Y.C clear polish) Always works out great.
well its good to use a base coat so ur nails can be healthier
it helps the polish stay... fiften mitues is too short for it to dry. try an hour
u dont have to use a base coat but it protects your nail from getting stained and let ur nail polish dry for atleast 30 to 45 minutes sometimes maybe 1 hour......... hope this helped!!!!!!!! :)
you dont need a base coat.

    i never do.

How you tell if a nail is zinc-coated (galvanized)?

I have a bunch of nails here with no packaging and I need a glavanized one for a science experiment that I'm doing..How you tell if a nail is zinc-coated (galvanized)?
Try to scratch the nails (just like cutting it)with a sharp object or a hacksaw blade and if you could see any difference it is only coated, and if its not ,then it's galvanized. And also, galvanized is more lighter than the steel/iron.You can also observed it by dropping the nails from the floor. If you drop the steel/iron nails it produce a much louder sound than the galvanized. So,you can start now your experiment by the LAW of Gravity..How you tell if a nail is zinc-coated (galvanized)?
Galvanized coatings are usually a silver color with some darker markings also.
Hi - A Galvanized nail will be a dull silver colour and probably very slightly rough, unlike an ungalvanized one which will be smooth.
It willm be shiny and smooth if it is galvanized. It will be dull and rough if it is zinc-coated Aka Hot-Dipped
As it is an experiment trial and error should solve you problem

  • I need to put a coat of spaclke over existing nails holes that i had to bang in..?

Is there a quick spacle mix i can get at home depot and is it better than the regular stuff? the holes are kind of deep and wide.. and how many coatsI need to put a coat of spaclke over existing nails holes that i had to bang in..?
Just buy a regular can of ready made spackle. It is much easier than mixing it, does not cost that much and will last quite a long time as long as you make sure the lid is on tight. This will fool you, you'll think it's on but its not and then it will all dry up.

When you spackle the nail holes, make sure all of the loose stuff is gone, and dampen the hole with a damp cloth. Put a shallow coat in the bottom of the hole, let it dry; then keep filling it with shallow coats, letting each one dry until it is full. When dry sand lightly til smooth.I need to put a coat of spaclke over existing nails holes that i had to bang in..?
There are premixed spackles in little plastic tubs (from a few ounces to a cupful). There is also spackle in a plastic tube that squeezes out like toothpaste. It comes out pink and dries to white so you can tell when it is ready to paint over.
Certainly a spackle or mud will work, but after installing thousands of sq. ft. of drywall, and applying thousands of pounds of mud, and thousands of gallons of paint, I NEVER use nails.

Anyway, If the nails aren't galvanized it's very likely that the moisture in the MUD/Spackle will rust the nail head and eventually the stain will bleed out.

I suggest a spot of paintable caulk into the holes first, leaving a depression, OR a dab of KILZ on the depressed nail head then fill the holes.

    Steven Wolf
yea there are quick mixes but not always better there is a mix called 90 and it dries quick but dries like a rock and is stuff to sand lowes sells a quick drying spackle not found at home depot (green lid) and sands like normal spackle for a average nail pop expect to spackle 2-3 times depending on how smooth and even your coats are good luck
Use ready-mix drywall compound. You might get by with a single coat. Be careful putting it on so you don't have to spend so much time taking it of.

Short-cut tip. Let your compound set up and wipe with a damp sponge which will remove excess. That saves a lot of messy sanding.
there is pre-mixes~~~~~~you will be able to tell after you start to fill them let it dry after one coat then fill the cracks up again~~~~~
Use joint compound it comes in small tubs. Fill the hole, scrap, let dry, sand and then prime it. Always prime or you will be able to see where the repair was done. Then once that is dry, paint. Repeat the steps if needed to fill holes.
We've had pretty good success with the stuff that comes in a squeeze tube much like toothpaste for smaller jobs like I believe you're talking about. If the nail holes are just the size of the nail head, put enough spackle on to fill the hole and allow to dry. There may be some shrinkage as it dries that requires another application, but you may also get away with just one. You will still need to sand, prime, and then paint. Don't skip the priming step - trust me, you'll be able to see the spots if you do!
Yes. Fill the indents with a fast drying wall compound, then mix some texture with your primer. It takes some practice to match the existing texture. Experiment with different rollers, and brushes. All of this is available at your do-it-yourself store, but I prefer to do business at a local hardware, or in this case paint supply store.
no need for me to answer. listen to steven.
What is regular stuff? I know Spackle in a quart can that is in a creamy consistency.(Pre mixed). And you can get the dry powder called polyfilla. This is used more for large cracks and patches like drywall mudders would do.

The advantage of making yourself you can mix up a batch that is quite dry(really thick like Scotish oatmeal). With the nearly dry consistency, less water needs to evaporate(drying) which gives you less shrinkage. Read the instructions on the box before you buy it.

Also be aware that waterbased spackle will cause the nails to rust (if you didn't use galvanized nails) and that will bleed thru the spackle and thru the paint.

So, after the spackle dries thoroughly. spray on a light coat of Kilz in the area before putting on paint.
';Bang in'; the nail below the surface of the wall, or remove the nail using a claw hammer or bar. being careful not to mar the wall. With a ';nail set'; or if using a claw hammer by placing something to insulate the tool from the wall between the tool pry out the nail. Once that's done sprackle the hole . Don't try to do it all at one time, let the first application dry because it'll shrink,.( It' doesn't take long under the right conditions ) then add another coat so it's above the surface of the wall. When it drys either sand it down even with the surface using medium or fine sandpaper or wet sand it with a wet sponge block for a smooth finish.
Use the proper material which is ';JOINT COMPOUND'; you can buy a little tub of it. Put 3 light coats on. Good luck Les the painter
use ready patch, it dries good and hard and can be sanded and painted the best.
one step spackle it is called white lighting drys fast

paint able in 30 min. lite coats if holes are deep thi is non shrinking spackel any diy or hdwe,or paint store yes do prime be for finish coat
Yes just get some of that light weight wall patch, it comes premixed it applys easily and dries fast.

Does top coat go on before or after painting your nails?

I'mpainting my nails tomorrow (as a joke) and i need to know if top coat goes on before or after applying the nail polish. Thanks.Does top coat go on before or after painting your nails?
a professional manicure will have the following layers:

    base coat

    color

    color

    top coat

    top coat

if you are just doing it as a joke/don't want it to last for a whole week, the whole process isn't that necessary. make sure you get some nail polish remover to take it off too!Does top coat go on before or after painting your nails?
it goes on after, 2 applications which I have seen every time I get a manicure. but in beauty school, we were taught it goes on once before the polish and then again after the polish.
Its like painting a car... primer (base coat), color, then top coat. I always do base coat, but a lot of people don't. Sometimes you need to put on two layers of the nail color too...
you can do it under as well. it makes the paint last longer :P

    so you could do:

    top coat

    colour

    colour

    top coat.

double the colour is better aswell
goes on as very last coat...top coat isthe very top (last) coat! Hope the joke goes well *wink*
after. and what color haha u can also put it on before and after so ur nails dont turn yellow after you remove the nail polish
    AFTER
Top coat after painting our nails, base coat first:)
It goes on after the nail polish is dry!
Yes. it goes on after this makes it so when you have your nails with a color to make it shine and protect it better :D
It goes on TOP. What do you think?
I have heard that you do, i think it to help it last long
after. thats why its called TOP coat!
    after lol

Can i still put a clear coat on my nails?

okay, i'm a girl who just LOVES nail polish. i can't stay away from it. sadly, my nails are really yellow now. but i wanted to know if i can still put a clear coat on, so the yellow will go away without it turning even more yellow. Can i still put a clear coat on my nails?
they actually make clear nail pollish,

that is specifically made to undo that yellowing.

i'm not sure what it's called,

but i've seen it at cvs.

    google the name,

    so you know for sure.

    but that would be best,

try it and see if it works.

danielle(:Can i still put a clear coat on my nails?
No i dont think you can but to make sure i would ask anail technician they might do treatment's...
Here's a remedy for yellowed nails.

    1. Fill a bowl with warm water. Add 1/2 teaspoon sea salt and one sliced lime.

    2. Soak hands for ten minutes.

    3. Mix one-table spoon hydrogen peroxide with two tablespoons baking soda.

    4. Brush on nails with a small toothbrush (not your own of course..) ((Oh, and of course nobody else's!))

    5. Rinse immediately...

Then you can paint your nails!

What's the difference between a clear base coat and a clear over coat in painting your nails?

The base coat smooths out the surface of the nail, helps the nail colour bond to the nail, and protects the nail colour from staining your nails. The clear overcoat prevents chipping, makes your nails shinier, smooths out rough patches, and makes the polish last longer.

I just buy the 2 in 1 base and top coats, it saves money and works just as well.

But regular clear nail polish is not a good idea for top/base coat, although it works great as a makeshift nail polish remover! :)What's the difference between a clear base coat and a clear over coat in painting your nails?
the purpose of the base coat is to protect the surface of your nail from being damaged or stained by the nail polish you use over it, while the top coat is used to keep your nail polish from chipping and protects it so you can wear it longer. :]What's the difference between a clear base coat and a clear over coat in painting your nails?
The base coat is to protect the nail from the nail polish and damage. The over coat is to protect the nail polish and to keep it on longer. Its also added for shine.

What nail polish, base or top coats can I use to prevent chipping?

I have used Revlon Colorstay for a couple of years, but now that is starting to chip as well... Any suggestions? What nail polish, base or top coats can I use to prevent chipping?
I personally like Opi and Essie. They cost like seven to ten dollars and they last longer than other brands.

Debbie's right. Sally Hansen has nice products also and a great variety. What nail polish, base or top coats can I use to prevent chipping?
    i use Sally Hansen
It doesn't make much difference what nail polish you use, it is mostly up to the base coat, top coat, and wether or not you start with clean dry nails. You want to do a professional job at home, get Orly ';Bonder'; Base Coat, and Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat. I use them and I swear they work.
i'm not too sure about which brands to use(but stick with high quality ones though), but I do know that if you clean your nails with nail polish remover beforehand(regardless if you had polish on them), it will zap the natural oil on your nails and prevent chips. Also try applying the top coat UNDER the nail to make the polish last longer if you type alot.
Sally Hansen Diamond Hard. It's great.
I don't have any suggestions on brands.

However, you could get Nail Hardeners, those make your nails harder and therefore wont chip.
Sally Hansen has some great products! I use the 'tough as diamonds' top coat, and it works really well.
    anything sally hansen!
sally Hanson is the best answer. but to make then strong and prevent them from chipping use warm olive oil to massage your nails and hands b4 sleeping, it will make a world of a difference.

  • The leaves of a plant are completely coated with a clear nail polish and the plant dies a few weeks later.?

. What is the best explanation of what happened?

    A. The plant could not breakdown glucose.

    B. The plant could not take up water.

    C. Sunlight could not penetrate the leaf.

    D. CO2 could no longer enter the plant. The leaves of a plant are completely coated with a clear nail polish and the plant dies a few weeks later.?
    D.

Glucose breakdown happens in all the cells, roots take up water, sunlight goes through the clear nail polish. D is the answer because the nail polish plugs the stomata and CO2 can no longer enter.

Why is it important to use top and bottom coat while painting your nails?

...Why is it important to use top and bottom coat while painting your nails?
It looks better and last longer too. xWhy is it important to use top and bottom coat while painting your nails?
The bottom coat helps bond the base color to your nail and the top coat seals the base color so that it won't chip or peel.
The base coat keeps the nail color from staining your nails as well as providing a smoother surface for the nail color to adhere to.

The top coat keeps the color more vibrant and longer lasting
a girl, is correct on this one the base coat helps prevent nails going yellow, top coat provides glossy finish and prevents chipping
base keeps your nails from yellowing (especially with dark colours), top keeps your nail polish from chipping :)

When painting nails and top coat?

Is it better to paint a top coat on nails after colored polish has dried or while it's still slightly wet? When painting nails and top coat?
They can still be wet. I;ve never had any problem doing it that way. When painting nails and top coat?
After. If it's slightly wet the tip of the topcoat brush may change to the color you've painted with. Use Out the Door, it's the best top coat I've used.
You should put on the top coat after it has dried because when you but on the top coat while it is even a little wet, it can get messed up.
after, definitely b/c if it's still wet the brush marks might leave imprints in your nail polish
    after!
after...otherwise the color will get rubbed off or messed up in some way

    D. CO2 could no longer enter the plant. The leaves of a plant are completely coated with a clear nail polish and the plant dies a few weeks later.?
    D. Carbon dioxide could no longer enter the plant. The nail polish seals the stomata in epidermis of the leaf blocking gas exchange and transpiration. Blocking transpiration would also interfere with temperature regulation of the leaves and slow movement of water from the roots to the leaves. So, letter B could also be considered correct as well.

I suspect that the plant would die much more rapidly than in a few weeks!

How many coats should be put on the nail to be sure of no breakage?

I went today to get the 'acrylic' taken off for the 'real' gel nails. It's very natural yes but my nails are still kind of soft, they are not hard like i need them to be. How do I get rid of yellow nails from dark polish and no base coat?

I got into a really bad habit of not putting on base coat when I painted my nails and now I can't get rid of this yellow look on my nails. I have tried soaking them in lemon juice but that doesn't work. I am looking for any suggestions. How do I get rid of yellow nails from dark polish and no base coat?
Wow your in for a treat! I just read this magazine article on 10 brilliant uses for toothpaste here I'll quote it for you

    ';Oops! You gave yourself a knockout manicure but you forgot to apply a base coat before painting your nails a dark color. And now that you've removed the polish, your nails have taken on a yellowish tin! To get them back to their normal shade, apply whitening toothpaste on an old toothbrush, and use tiny circular motions to scrub the surface of each fingernail. The detergents in the toothpaste lift off stain-causing particles, returning your nails to top form in no time.';

Hope this helps! How do I get rid of yellow nails from dark polish and no base coat?

    there's some stuff at Wal-mart, it's called yellow-out

it's worked on me b/c i have the same prob.

    hope it works!
I had the same problem and tried everything. I had to keep my nails painted at all times because they were so yellow. So, I got really tired of always painting my nails. So, I took off all the nail polish and had to let my ugly yellow nails be seen for several weeks until they grew out and the new nail grew out white, then I kept trimming until I had all white nails again. I have never painted my nails again, except with a clear or light pink. Then I take it off within a couple days to keep my nails white. It feels so free to have white, nice looking nails that I don't have to hide.
YOU CAN BUY A NAIL BUFFER FROM ANY BEAUTY SUPPLY STORE, THEY ARE VERY VERY FINE GRAIN SAND PAPER DESIGNED FOR NAILS. THE DISCOLORATION IS ONLY ON THE TOP LAYERS OF YOUR NAIL AND THIS IS A GOOD SOLUTION AS LONG AS YOU DON'T FILE THE HECK OUT OF THE NAIL AND MAKE IT THIN.
Get yourself a good buffer. It will remove the surface area that is stained without making your nail weak.
Try buffing them, and if you are not allergic to bleach you can soak your nails in clear water with a little bit of bleach! you can go to the pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to refer something you (over the counter) of course.good luck!

what top coat to apply on nails before applying rhinestone's?

can i use crazy glue to glue them on?

also can i use artificial nails to glue them on?the ones that you buy at rid aid for 5.00 dollars? What top coat to apply on nails before applying rhinestone's?
You could use nail glue but that stuff always leaves my nails a mess afterwards. I use rhinestones a lot on my nails and i tend to use a clear nail varnish. It's worked fine for me so far (: However if you want the rhinestones on for a while (for me its more than a week) then i would recommend glue as it is stronger and will probably keep them on longer (im not 100% sure though cos i get bored quickly and change gems often so have never needed to use gluee ) =DWhat top coat to apply on nails before applying rhinestone's?
    you can use nail glue.

but just the wet nail polish would work pretty well.
What I do is, I apply the topcoat and wait for it to dry very well (about 30-40 minutes), then apply the stones with NAIL glue. Not super glue, because super glue is harmful to your skin and it can melt the silver plating on the rhinestone so it wont shine very well.

I highly discourage using glue-on artificial nails. They not only look bad, but if you have any air bubbles underneath the nail and moisture gets trapped in, you could get fungus.
I wouldn't use crazy glue because that crap is bad for your cuticles.

How long does it take for 2 coats of nail polish to dry?

i'm sure by now ;pHow long does it take for 2 coats of nail polish to dry?
With a single coat it should take two to ten minutes to fully harden and a second coat a little longer. It also depends on the formula, quality, whether you applied a base coat or top coat and the thickness of the coats.

My nail polish never stays on! I use Seche base coat and Sally Hansen Beyond perfect?

topcoat, but the tips, after work (at a deli) are completely bare. Any better topcoats or advice I can use?My nail polish never stays on! I use Seche base coat and Sally Hansen Beyond perfect?
Base coat is extremely important. It holds the rest of the color layers to the nail. Also, make sure that nothing is on your nail before you color--no oils or soap. No NOT wash your hands before applying nail color unless it's just plain water. Try a bit of nail polish remover before the base coat to be sure all oils are gone. Use nail lacquer--NOT nail enamel or nail polish. Big difference between the 3 types. My nail polish never stays on! I use Seche base coat and Sally Hansen Beyond perfect?
let your nail polish dry in between coats, the best way is sit down with a good book or tv show that way you won't have to 'wait' for it to dry! Also, I recommend wearing gloves when youdo the dishes.
well maybe try a better kind of nail polish , like O.P.I it really good it maybe expensive but its worth it !!
Do you give your polish a chance to dry in between coats? Let each coat dry for at least 5mins, If you have to do any dishwashing at the deli, the dishwashing detergent is not good for polish, it makes it crack. So if you can take the time to use gloves do so, and it will last for a while. If you are in cold weather a lot, make sure you wear gloves as much as possible, because the cold air will make the polish crack also. It is not necessary the price of the polish, but how you handle your hands once you put the polish on.
I don't know answer, I just need points:)
    Try OPI - It's brilliant.

  • Do you use a top coat and or base coat when doing your nails?

I never do a base coat, because I buff and shine my nails before I apply nail polish.

But I always do a top coat, for shine and protection =P

I've been having problem with my top coat messing up my nails I just did, it seem to smudge the color. Even when I wait a loooong time to make SURE that its' completely dry...Do you use a top coat and or base coat when doing your nails?
I recommend using a base coat ONLY. Top coats are usually for manicures, which are often clear, or when you have no nail polish on. Top coats DO mess up your color because they absorb it. I recommend using only a base coat, if you're going to wear nail polish, because it prevents the nail color from chipping and of course, preserves it.Do you use a top coat and or base coat when doing your nails?
my mom is a professional nail artist.... use both top coat and base coat...... it depends on the nail polish or the top coat might be too thick. When the top cot gets thick after a while which happends to all top coats and base coats, it can smudge the nail polish.
I use a Maximum Growth bottom coat and then a clear coat so that way my manicure lasts longer.
always do. it takes me two hours to do my nails.
I use both a base coat and top. Mine never smudges my color though.

Can I put a base coat on under fake nails?

I need to re-do my acrylic nails, but I want to apply a treatment base coat on my natural nails first, like Nail Tek Foundation Xtra, and I don't want to wait for my natural nails to grow out. Can I use any kind of a treatment base coat (not cuticle oil though) that helps treat my nails under my acrylics, without causing the acrylic to lift or not stick ?

    black looks messy when chipped

    and sometimes kinda goth-ish.

    clear is more professional :))

black. claer is just boringWhich is better? clear coat or black nail polish?
black. im kind of a punkrock person. and plus its different. and actually VISIBLE.
I think clear is the way to go because black makes it look messy when chipped whereas clear gives your nails a nice shine and it is not noticeable when thay have chipped.
Depends on your style and the occasion.

I wear clear most of the time.

But if I am going out somewhere and want to look trendy and casual, I might throw up some black.

But in 2009 I heard blue nail polish is in more than black.
i personally like black just because it's different from a lot of people:]

i am not goth, i have blonde hair and blue eyes
    clear. dont be gothic
I like clear, chips are really noticeable in the black polish.

Which is better acrylic or gel I want to get my natural nails done with a top coat heavier then nail polish!?

I was just at the nail salon this weekend and had that exact question. The lady said that the gel was better for people that are sensitive to chemicals. And she said that they do not use the drill tool thing for the gel nails like they do for the acrylics. I suggest getting the gels done, but I do know they cost a bit more.

Good Luck!Which is better acrylic or gel I want to get my natural nails done with a top coat heavier then nail polish!?
well u can definatly get a silk wrap if u want to keep ur natural nails and if u want to get them to be stronger but gel is good too personally i like my nails silk wrapped.Which is better acrylic or gel I want to get my natural nails done with a top coat heavier then nail polish!?
I don't use either. I use something called glaze. It is like a really thin acrylic, but your nails don't get beat up nearly as bad. I looks more natural, too.
i prefer acrylic. they last longer and in my opinon are stronger. I used to wear acrylic tips and worked as a painter, and prepper in the auto body business and had no problems keeping them on.
I'd go with the gel. It has a heavier coating (and it seems like thats what you want.)

I use it all the time for a top coat, not sure about for base, i'm pretty sure I had it on and just decided to leave it on a put another color over it, should work fine.
Absolutely. Using it as a base coat makes sure your nails don't get stained a yellowish color and using it as a top coat keeps the colored nailpolish on for longer without it chipping :)
    Yes..

If you wear a colored polish its always good to apply a clear coat before to prevent yellowing nails. And a clear coat on top to help seal the color polish.

  • Nail polish/ top coat/ strengthener Questions?

I have just recently stopped chewing my nails and have been over painting them so they're pretty dry. What is the difference between putting a regular top coat, regular nail polish and a strengthening coat.

Also, I was wondering if those coats that claim to make your nails grow faster actually work.

What are the negative effects of using a 7 sided nail buffer stick. Does it make them weak?

How do you keep the tips clean? The underside of my nails are really dirty and I've never run across this problem since my nails have never been this long.

How often is it healthy to paint my nails? I don't want to over dry them.

How unhealthy is nail polish remover?

THANKS! I know that's a lot but I just have all these questions. :] You can answer as many or little as you'd like. Incite and examples are welcomed.Nail polish/ top coat/ strengthener Questions?
    WOW!

    lostsa questions.

    first Q:

a top-coat is usually a clear, polish-like substance that you are supposed to put over your normal coat of nail polish after it dries.

regular nail polish is just, well, regular nail polish. the more coats, the darker, but i advise against more than two coats. three could work, but that's a bit risky. then, if you put more than two, sometimes it wont even dry completely no matter how long you fan them.

a strengthening coat is the exact same as a top-coat, except for it sounds more intriguing because it sounds like it would protect your nails from damage better. it doesn't.

    second Q:

no, those advertisements are completely false. no nail polish or coats make your nails grow faster. the only reason why it may seem that way is because when you put your nail polish on, your nails may be shorter because you just trimmed them. then, a week later when you remove the nail polish, your nails have naturally grown at their same pace, it's just you notice it more.

    third Q:

yes, it does weaken your nails, but it really depends. honestly, it's obvious that it would weaken your nails even a little, because every single side brushes or scrapes away SOME part of the nail. for example, the buffer takes off a very thin layer of nail on top to make the nail shiny. but really, as long as you're not using it more than twice a week, it will make no difference whatsoever.

    fourth Q:

buy a nail-clipper at CVS or something. it's not only a nail clipper, but it also has a little, tiny knife-looking object that you can swing forward, and it scrapes underneath your nails without hurting you, because it's hardly sharper than a butter knife. if you can't find a nail-clipper (i cant see why not, ask your mom or something) then any sturdy, thin object will serve its purpose for scraping under your nails.

    fifth Q:

it is healthy to paint your nails every other week. i would suggest painting them one sunday, keeping it on for a week, and then removing it the next, and go without nail polish for a week, and so on... as long as you wash your hands regularly (with soap!) and use some kind of hand lotion, then you're good to go with the dryness problem. but it's still good to give your nails a break.

    sixth Q:

nail polish remover is perfectly healthy. mostly it's just rubbing alcohol with some other harmless fluids mixed in.

i hope my info was valuable to you! :)

Do I need a base coat to paint my nails and toenails?

Is it neccisary? Or could I just put the color on then the clear top coat? What does the base coat do? Do you use a base coat?Do I need a base coat to paint my nails and toenails?
You don't have to use a base coat, no. But a good quality basecoat will help prevent your nails from being stained from the polish - especially the darker shades. Also, it serves as sort of a double sided tape and provides a 'sticky' surface for the polish to adhere to. And that will make the polish last longer. A good quality basecoat also tends to allow the polish to be applied smoothly, which is an added benefit in itself. So, while it is not necesary, I feel that it is very helpful to use a basecoat. And, of couse, always use a good quality topcoat. A clear nail polish is not the same thing as a topcoat. It may be close to being the same, but topcoat is better for this purpose.Do I need a base coat to paint my nails and toenails?
I always thought a base coat of clear was required. Shows what I know. Or don't.
Well what a base coat does is stops the nail color dying your nail, so I suppose you don't always need to use it depending on the type and color of nail polish you are using. I have repeatedly died, my nails pink and it look really bad.
No- you don't. Base coats will help the polish last longer and not chip off as quickly! Top coat is enough!
mabey u should juss go to the shop
I bet people will say you need it, but the truth is you don't! In my opinion anyway. It helps your colour stay on without chipping, and also prevents discolouration to your nails, but if you wear nail polish occasionally and not for long periods at a time you shouldn't find this a problem. Anyhow, you can get base coats quite cheaply if you want to try it yourself and see if it makes a big difference. I don't bother with it personally.

If you intentionally chip off your nail polish can that be bad for the nail itself, even with a base coat?

In the short term no but over time as nail varnish takes the first layer of the nail with it your nails will become weaker. Its better if you use an acetone-free nail varnish remover. If you intentionally chip off your nail polish can that be bad for the nail itself, even with a base coat?
no, trust me, it's a bad habit i have and i do it all the time.If you intentionally chip off your nail polish can that be bad for the nail itself, even with a base coat?
Not at all, as long as you don't snap off your nail, you're fine.

Anyone who paints nails with only base coat?

Can I paint my fingernails with only the base coat and no other coats? I thought they look clean this way.Anyone who paints nails with only base coat?
yeah, a base coat alone is perfectly fine.

a top coat sometimes helps but it's not necessary without any other coats on there.. and without a top coat, i think they look a little more natural (not too glossy).

i'm a manicurist.Anyone who paints nails with only base coat?
using a top coat instead of a bottom coat will last longer, just because of the chemistry of each. But it won't affect your nails at all if you choice a top coat or a base coat as long as your not putting color on.
Sure, why not! It'll last longer with a top coat though
yeah you can just do that, it'll look clean and shiny
i only use the color.. i dont use a clear coat or anything.. it just helps to keep the color from chiping off a lil longer is all....

I was told that you should put a bottom coat of nail polish on then the color then the top coat and every time i do that the nail polish start to chip off after a couple of days why is that because any time i did my nail i didn't put a bottom coat of nail polish on or a top coat and it last allot longer why does it chip after a couple of days if you put the top and bottom coat onWhy do you have to put a top coat of nail polish on?

the bottom coat, which is the base coat is applied because it helps from staining your nail plate %26amp; the top coat usually seals the nail polish for it to last longer plus it'll make your nail polish more glossy looking.

%26amp; if your nail polish is chipping, maybe you're doing something a lot w/ your hands, like washing the dishes or w/e.
yes its suppose to help preserve the polish and help make your nail shine and help enhance the color.

but idk what's wrong cause usually when i do coats it does everything it's suppose to.

maybe your to active with your hands that it chips more? sorry idk..

    Nail polish top coat?

Now I know your supposed to put on one or two coats of your color then a clear top coat. In my situation I only have a tiny bit of top coat left in the bottle that the brush can hardly reach. I want to know if I can just mix the nail color and little bit of top coat and still get the glossy nails effect?Nail polish top coat?
ya, i think you can, that's a good ideaNail polish top coat?
Nail polish top coat is meant to protect the colour so it lasts longer without chipping or scratching. The shine is just a bonus (if you're wanting shine). I don't know how your nails will turn out if you mix the colour and top coat. You might change the colour of it but it might work so try it and if it turns out like crap, just take it off with remover and buy a new top coat. [:
No, I don't recommend u mix the polish together... You are better off just going to your local drug store and buying a top coat. They sell good ones for about $2 or so.. You wouldn't want to damage the color and have nothing after.. If u mix then u would not get the glossy effect. and when u top coat it, do it twice. When I do my nails ppl are always asking me if I went to the salon.. I laugh n say NO! I did them myself. Two clear coatings works best ;]
Thin the top coat out with some nail polish remover... it'll make more for you to use and it will dry faster.
yeah, i think that would be ok, but first see if you can shake the bottle to get some on the brush, if not, it would be fine to mix it. Hope this helps :)

What different between upper coat and base coat?is for do colouring nail?

There are some nail polish companies that will sell you something different for both the base coat (under the nail polish and the first coat on the nail) and the upper coat (over the last coat of nail polish) but in actuality, you only need one - a transparent nail polish to protect the nail as the base coat, and again as the upper coat to hold off the chipping/fading.

Don't get suckered into paying more for two types of products. If you're concerned abou the nourishment of your nails, get a treatment instead, rather than waste money on getting base/upper coat.

Plus, with transparent nail polish, it has many other uses, such as to coat the back of cheap earrings if you have sensitive ears, or to paint over tiny screws such as for sunglasses so they don't fall out so easily.

Hope this helps! What different between upper coat and base coat?is for do colouring nail?
base coat is done for thickenss and for polish when u done the base coat after that if do the upper coat it will be more shines and the real colour of the polish will appearWhat different between upper coat and base coat?is for do colouring nail?
base is under the nail polish while upper caot is to protect the nail color on top
Base coat is to prevent nail color from seeping into the nail bed and causing discoloration (yellowish tinge) and upper coat is to seal in th color and prevent it from early chipping
It's base coat and top coat. Base is first applied after the nail is buffed, to adhere the colour, and top coat is to seal and help the nail dry-while keeping it shiney! ;)
base coat is to get proper upper coat.
upper coat is stronger i think

Is it just me or does Top Coat make your nails chip faster?

I have tried not using Top Coat after being sick of my nails chipping after 1 day.

I found that they chipped less?

    Does anyone else agree?

I have used both cheap and expensive Top Coat and the same thing happens? Is it just me or does Top Coat make your nails chip faster?
I have found that happens on some clients. Do what works best for your nails. Don't worry about a top coat if the polish adheres better without it.

It could be that you are applying the polishes too thick. Is it just me or does Top Coat make your nails chip faster?
If top coat is making your nails chip faster, try applying the top coat first (like as a base coat)....or you can buy special bottom coat polishes. It makes a huge difference! There are also bottom-and-top coats available in one bottle, where you can use it as a bottom and top coat. The better brands can be a bit pricey...around 10 bucks...but it's totally worth it if you are constantly reapplying nail polish. I highly recommend Essie's ';to dry for'; clear polish.
They should not be chipping. Make sure you clean your nail bed from all oils before applying your base coat. Put on your 2 coats of polish and one coat of top coat. You should not have any chipping for about a week. A lot does depend on what kind of products you are using. I f you would like some recommendations you can email me.
Yeah, same for me. I think it's because the thicker the layer(s) of polish on your nail, the easier it is to get caught and chipped on stuff.
mine dont chip. maybe try putting a base coat on first.
I thought I was the only one!

What is the best Nail polish brand, topcoat, and base coat for nails?

I've been painting my nails every week for about 2 years now.

And I want to know what the best nail polish brand is. I've been using OPI, but I've been unhappy with the change to the big FAT brush.

Also, what's the longest lasting topcoat? I'm using ROCK Topcoat.

And lastly, best base coat...I was using one by OPI, but anythings fine.

I just want my nail polish to stay on longer with out chips.

    -best topcoat

    -best nail polish

    - best base coat.

Thanks %26lt;3What is the best Nail polish brand, topcoat, and base coat for nails?
I like China Glaze. Most the salons use either OPI or China Glaze, but you don't like the brush for the OPI so I would go with the China Glaze. For a base coat, I would use a bonder( I use Orly Bonder found at Sally Beauty supply), it creates kind of like an adhesive bond between your nail and the first layer of polish. Then do two layers of polish and the top coat. Any top coat will do, because the only thing top coat does is add shine to the polish. What is the best Nail polish brand, topcoat, and base coat for nails?
Hey girl... I like China Glaze and Sally Hansen

Sally puts out a brand of no chip top coat but i'm rlly not sure what it is called.... But there actually is a specific one called NO CHIP but you would have to look around for it.... Not sure what brand puts it out... If you want to find good quality polishes go to Sally Beauty Supply where Nail places actually go to purchase there products for their Nail shops. Hope I could help!!!

    AmberC:)
i dotn think opi is very good!!

there is not many good brands of nail varnish but bourjois ones are pretty good and get good ratings!! xx

My nail varnish says 'apply a base coat'. Does that mean I add 2 coats of the polish or buy a base varnish?

what you have to do is put a base coat on - a base coat is a totally different to the coloured nail polish. its job is to protect your nail - sometimes if you don't put a base colour on and u put like..yellow nail varnish on, it stains your nails

base colours are just clear, so get any clear nail gloss and paint your nails, then let it dry and put the colour on!

%26lt;3My nail varnish says 'apply a base coat'. Does that mean I add 2 coats of the polish or buy a base varnish?
Yes it pretty much means 2 coats. The base coat is like the first coat, the main coat. If you get what i'm saying. Then you have to add your second coat. I have nail varnish, so i know.My nail varnish says 'apply a base coat'. Does that mean I add 2 coats of the polish or buy a base varnish?
Buy a clear nailpolish .. a base coat prevents the nail colour you were goin to use from staining the nail .. so its allways better to apply a clear nail varnish , then your colour %26amp; even another clear coat .. just make sure you let it dry in between each coat xx
it means you just need a clear polish on the nail before you put the regular polish on.

    any clear polish will do.

2 coats of polish on top of the clear will make the color more rich.

  • Nail varnish base coat?

    Do they work?

What is a good one to use?Nail varnish base coat?
Base coats are not just clear polish anymore, the technology has changed. Base coats are much faster drying and lay down a ';sticky'; base that enables polish to attach itself with greater endurance. Yes they work, especially with a professional top coat over the polish. Sticky by Creative Nail is my fave.Nail varnish base coat?
Nail polish base coat is used to prevent dark colored nail polish from staining the nails. Any clear or light colored polish will do this. Sally Hansen is a very good base coat to use, but really any one will do the job.
Any clear polish will stop dark colours staining your nails.

Nail Techs, does Tammy Taylor's Z coat yellow in tanning beds?

How to get a shiny effect on nails without a clear coat?

i kno it kinda sounds impossible but 1 of my frnds did it n she isnt tellin me how 2 do it.pls tell if u kno.that lasts for a long time. How to get a shiny effect on nails without a clear coat?
you have to buy a nail file that has four different grits (textures) and colors to it. but find one that has white and grey atleast. you first use the most coarse texture and you file your nails. Keep doing this w/every single nail using all four grits from the most coarse to the finest one, so then you will see shine. but you have do all the steps. remember last step is the one that is the least textured. How to get a shiny effect on nails without a clear coat?
If you want a shiny effect on unpainted nails, go to the drugstore where they sell nail files. There will be one that is like a 5 or 7 way file. It has different grits to shapes the nail, then smooth, buff, and shine it.
