I always like to have a base coat. It is probably fine to use your top coat stuff as your base.

A base helps adhere to the nail - color adheres, and sometimes lasts longer.

I apply the top coat every other day to make the polish last.Nail polish: can the top coat be used as a base coat?
A base coat is harder, but you can use top coat as a base. The manicure without base coat is more likely to chip, that's all. Also, a dark top coat can stain some nails...a clear or matte base coat prevents this.
Base coat prevents your nails from turning yellow from the polish and it makes the nail polish last longer. It's better to use base coat vs. no base coat, when I get lazy and don't use it, my nail polish chips off in about 2 days.

Find one that's base coat AND top coat combined, that's the one I use. It's ';Sally Hansen Maximum Growth plus Base + Top Coat.';

I hope this helped :]
Base coats have two purposes. One is to seal out the natural oils from your nail bed so it doesn't interact with the nail polish preventing it from adhering well. This is why polish chips and peels. The other is to prevent darker nail polish from staining your nail bed if there is no barrier in between the two. You should try ';Crystal Shield'; Base Coat from Kolibre Cosmetics. It really helps your nail polish stay on longer. And then finish with ';Victorian Glass'; Top Coat for an amazing shine!
