What's the difference between a clear base coat and a clear over coat in painting your nails?

The base coat smooths out the surface of the nail, helps the nail colour bond to the nail, and protects the nail colour from staining your nails. The clear overcoat prevents chipping, makes your nails shinier, smooths out rough patches, and makes the polish last longer.

I just buy the 2 in 1 base and top coats, it saves money and works just as well.

But regular clear nail polish is not a good idea for top/base coat, although it works great as a makeshift nail polish remover! :)What's the difference between a clear base coat and a clear over coat in painting your nails?
the purpose of the base coat is to protect the surface of your nail from being damaged or stained by the nail polish you use over it, while the top coat is used to keep your nail polish from chipping and protects it so you can wear it longer. :]What's the difference between a clear base coat and a clear over coat in painting your nails?
The base coat is to protect the nail from the nail polish and damage. The over coat is to protect the nail polish and to keep it on longer. Its also added for shine.
