Is a base coat NEEDED when polishing nails?

I was looking at stuff online about how to polish nails and all of them said to start with a base coat. Why is a base coat used? Do I need to use a base coat?

Also...

I tried using a base coat and then I did 2 coats of polish and 1 top coat. I let it dry for like 15 minutes and after that it smudged and some of it chipped. Did I use to much polish?

Thanks!

You don't NEED a base coat, but it helps the nail and supposedly makes it last longer, it only works like that for some of mine though. And yeah, you probably did. Try doing one coat and then 1 top coat, or ditch the whole top coat. or ditch the base and do the rest. :]Is a base coat NEEDED when polishing nails?
a base coat is used to prevent against the nail polish chipping or peeling off. i think you did use too much polish hun. what you should do is just put on the base coat and then either a thick layer of polish or two thin layers of polish. you don't want to pile up too much polish on your nail or it wont dry all the way and it'll smudge and just cause trouble. and you really don't need a top coat unless let's say you're going to prom or something and you want your nails to look fabulous and have absolutely no chance of chipping or any problems. you should give your nails a loooong time to dry for that though. like at least 30-40 minutes because of all the layers. and let each layer dry before putting on the next one
You don't really NEED a base coat but i think they suggest it because it keeps your nails healthier. Also, no matter how long you let your nails dry, they can still chip pretty easily but nicer nail polish (more expensive usually) can chip less easily. Waiting a little in between each coat of polish can also help. :)))))
yes, one base coat is good because you need to build the color unless you want it sheer, not only that but it will make it last longer. and some polish (if old) will dry slower. make sure it has a semi runny consistency, i like sally hansen flash dry you usually can get away with one coat if you must!
Nah.

If you use dark colours a lot, it might be best to avoid staining.

But i never use one and my nails are just fine, however, I don't use it all the time though.

My nails have a wee break in between.

I've also found that varnish goes on better without a base coat- just my experience.

You might have used too much.

Do very sheer layers, if there's too much it will dry on top but still be gungey underneath.
personally i dont use a base coat and i do two coats of nail color then let it dry for 30 minutes and then put a top coat on and let it dry for another 30, try putting your hand in front of a fan to help dry faster
I just did my nails. I just did the color (Shimmer %26amp; Shine from Bonnie Bell) and I did a top coat (N.Y.C clear polish) Always works out great.
well its good to use a base coat so ur nails can be healthier
it helps the polish stay... fiften mitues is too short for it to dry. try an hour
u dont have to use a base coat but it protects your nail from getting stained and let ur nail polish dry for atleast 30 to 45 minutes sometimes maybe 1 hour......... hope this helped!!!!!!!! :)
you dont need a base coat.
