The transparent coat that you apply before the nail polish is the base coat. There are many varieties of base coats and they may not always be clear. Base coats help the polish adhere to the nails better so your manicure will last longer and not chip so quickly. Also, they help polish flow onto the nails better making it easier to apply. You apply this coat first because it makes the nail polish go on smoother and last longer without chipping. This is also called the base! I`ve noticed that when I don`t do this, it literally chips off in like a day! Hope I answered your question!
It makes the color go on smoother and allows for eaiser removal later. It also makes the color longer wearing. Natural nails will still tend towards yellow if they always have polish on them without a break.
To stop the nail varnish from staining your nails. If you use red nail varnish it can turn your nails yellowish if you don't wear base coat underneath!
